Some argue that e-book reading isn’t the same experience as a paper book – no more turning over pages or savoring the “new book smell.” There’s no denying that. However, e-books have several benefits, including: Instead of carrying heavy books around, you can load several different books on your device and read a variety of literature wherever you are in an easy-to-read format. Environmental benefits. Going paperless saves trees and other resources involved with book production and shipping. 1-2-3 acquisition curve. As long as you have internet access, you can download books from either online bookstores or your local library. Programs like Overdrive and Amazon Prime make literally thousands of books available to you at the touch of a button. Reduced costs – e-books can be borrowed from libraries or purchased. You can also use the BitLit program, which provides you with a free e-book version of any physical book that you already own. There are many different type of e-book readers. Susan Polgar and I have offices all over the world. For years, we used those special meeting rooms to plan our research about how the strategies of chess could be applied to improving our investments. Where are our offices? You’ve seen them on the corners of most major cities: We sat in Starbucks, since I like coffee almost as much as I like chess. The most important thing that Susan said Along with analyzing how we could apply chess tactics to making better financial decisions, we played the occasional game of chess. I was a very, very consistent player– I lost every game. When we did our post-mortems, analyzing the mistakes that led to my doom, she always repeated these five words: “Look at the whole board.” That became my mantra, both in writing the book and giving financial seminars. What to do if someone breaks into your email (This is an important article that explains what you need to do if someone gets access to your email or bank account. After a perfectly normal exchange of emails with my office manager, a client sent us one more in the series asking for us to wire $49,950 to a lawyer in Singapore to complete the purchase of a property. That email red-flagged the account, and my eagle-eyed team leader called the client. “I didn’t send you a wire request,” the client replied. And then she paused. “Oh, man!” she realized, “my Gmail account has been hacked.” It happens all the time. You might be next. Or, if not, someone you know. So please pass this information on so everyone learns this basic self-defense. Like a chess player dealing with an unknown opponent, dealing with a hacker requires a carefully thought-out strategy, and then a series of tactics to make sure you don’t get checkmated by an evil cyber-criminal. The first half of this list contains strategies for avoiding getting hacked, and the second half of the list covers what to do after you’ve been attacked. Before you get hacked, set up a strategy to limit the damage. Carefully consider what information you keep online, what you store in the cloud, and with whom you share your log-in details. If you are reading this piece, I hope that you already downloaded a free copy of The Grandmaster’s Toolbox. Susan Polgar and I put that together in order to share the many online resources (and some off-line resources, too) that we use every day to sharpen our strategic thinking. I want to take a minute to highlight one of them which I am using right now, dictation software called Dragon Naturally Speaking. Since I write quite a bit (Rich As A King is just under 300 pages), I really like that I am able to simply talk to my computer and have it type everything for me. Using Dragon Naturally Speaking, even though I’m a very fast typist, helps me to get all of the ideas that I have in my head onto paper… or onto the screen. If you haven’t tried this type of software, I suggest that you check it out. Make sure that you have a good headset because the program works much better when you have a high-quality sound system. Dictation software is definitely a good investment, and a strategic move. This is because the most valuable thing that you have during your day is time, and if you waste it because you are a slow typist, you are literally losing money.
