Douglas Goldstein, CFP® is the founder and director of Profile Investment Services, Ltd., an international investment company.

When I started on Wall Street, my favorite client was my grandmother. She, in fact, had been a stock broker many years earlier, having been one of the first women to earn the license. Following in her footsteps, my mother also became an investment advisor, helping clients plan and build wealth throughout her 17-year career. I joined her as a partner in 1992, and the #1 lesson that I learned from her was the importance of educating clients about handling their money wisely. Though we could guide them, they ultimately needed to make the daily dollar decisions themselves. I obtained the licenses that allowed me to advise clients on trading not only stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, but also options, commodities, and futures. Eventually, I earned the license to supervise other advisors and also got the designation of Certified Financial Planner™. Even with all of these professional accreditations to trade securities, and having started my own international investment company, Profile Investment Service, Ltd., I view myself more as a financial educator. I write extensively, using easy-to-understand language so everyone can realize that investing isn’t only for the professionally trained. I write newspaper columns and books, teach college courses, and even host a personal finance radio program, The Goldstein on Gelt Show, which is what led to this book, since Susan was a guest of mine in 2010. The idea to use chess as a metaphor to illustrate financial concepts began when I listened to my kids’ chess coach teach them the philosophy of the game and I saw that he was using the same ideas that I used when speaking with clients. I brought up the idea with Susan when I interviewed her on the radio and she started coming up with more and more comparisons, too. We began a correspondence and quickly felt that we were on to something great. We started examining how we could employ chess strategies, the very same ones that had propelled Susan to championship status, to improve investment portfolios. As we both have had decades of experience in our fields along with a love for teaching, we decided to begin the task of researching and writing Rich As A King.
